THE DOREEN MONTALVO ​‘Do It Anyway’ ​SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

We are honored to announce Monica Ho & Francisca Muñoz as the recipients of the 2021 Doreen Montalvo ‘Do It Anyway’ Scholarship.

Francisca Muñoz is a Chilean artist currently living in New York City with a powerful voice that can move audiences like Doreen did with her voice. Monica Ho is from San Francisco, CA first-generation Asian American, with a huge desire to be part of a supportive community and give back to others. We welcome Monica & Francisca to the R.Evolución Latina family! Our commitment to supporting Latinx, and BIPOC artists aligns with our mission and the expansion of inspiring others to become leaders of change.

During the review and selection process, a group of diverse applicants that embodied Doreen’s desire to enrich her community through her art shared their stories.

We received over 50 applications from people in New York, Utah, California, Puerto Rico, Arizona, New Jersey, Florida and more. We want thank our Selection Committee for their time and for sharing their hearts and dedication to celebrating Doreen. Stay tuned to meet this year’s recipients and some of the 11 finalists that were part of this incredible process of art.

 

 

 

 

A little girl from the Bronx, rooted in her Puerto Rican culture and determined to make Broadway her home, Doreen never stopped following her dreams. She​ ​changed many lives through her art, through her mesmerizing voice and through her unending light. The voice behind some of Broadway’s greatest songs, Doreen Montalvo, was an ardent supporter of our mission.  ​A champion of R.Evolución Latina from day one, she lifted up each artist, supporting the dream of making a difference through art, empowering the Latinx community and did it all with constant joy.  At the age of 44, she made her Broadway debut as part of the Original Broadway Company (OBC) of ​In The Heights.​ She went on to perform in the OBC of ​On Your Feet!, The Story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan a​nd ​Mrs. Doubtfire​, and graced the screen in TV shows like ​Law and Order, Madame Secretary, The Good Wife.​ Her light will forever live on in the upcoming films ​In The Heights ​and ​West Side Story. The Doreen Montalvo Scholarship is not only a financial award, but also a mutual ​commitment from R.Evolución Latina to nurture ​the recipient to continue to dare to go beyond as they work toward their dreams. RL is committed to keep Doreen’s legacy alive.
