Doreen Montalvo 'Do It Anyway' Scholarship
Honoring the Legacy of Doreen Montalvo
Some legacies continue to inspire us long after someone is gone. For R.Evolución Latina, Doreen Montalvo’s spirit lives on through every artist who dares to dream, perseveres through challenges, and uses their gifts to uplift others. In her honor, we are proud to continue the $1,000 “Do It Anyway” Scholarship, celebrating an individual who demonstrates passion, resilience, leadership, and a commitment to making a difference through the arts.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Doreen was a proud Puerto Rican artist who believed that dreams were worth pursuing at any age. At 44, she made her Broadway debut in the original Broadway company of In The Heights, proving that determination, hard work, and faith in yourself can open doors at any stage of life. Her journey continued with On Your Feet!, Mrs. Doubtfire, and appearances in film and television. But beyond her remarkable career, Doreen's greatest gift was the way she made others feel seen, supported, and inspired. She believed in giving back, creating opportunities, and reminding the next generation that their voices and stories matter.
The “Do It Anyway” Scholarship carries that spirit forward. More than financial assistance, this scholarship represents a shared commitment to Dare to Go Beyond — to pursue artistic growth, overcome obstacles, embrace opportunities, and create a positive impact in our communities. Our Selection Committee will look beyond artistic achievements to recognize an individual who demonstrates character, generosity, perseverance, and a genuine desire to inspire others through their journey.
Doreen reminded us that it is never too late to follow a dream, never too difficult to try, and never too small an act to make a difference. Dream big. Lift others. Dare to go beyond. And when life challenges you — Do It Anyway.
Her legacy continues through all of us.
