This year’s camp aligned with summer programming that has been taking place since June in Puerto Rico. We have been investing funds in local artists that are working with communities in need, bringing inspiration and empowerment to communities that are still rebuilding from the devastation hurricane Maria left. NYC’s camp focused on “Art Rebuilds” giving campers a voice, and supporting those in need that are near and far.
Children from the five boroughs of New York City spent a week together being empowered through the arts thanks to artists from the Broadway and NYC artistic communities. The camp took on a new structure and welcomed a team of hand selected leaders to provide an even more nurturing process to allow campers to grow and believe in themselves.
For the first time a special sharing was presented at The Linney Theatre at the Signature Theatre Center. The D2GB Children’s Performing Arts Camp is the only free and bilingual Broadway summer camp in New York.
Some of the campers had the opportunity to visit Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum that is currently featuring camp leader “Chicle”s unique talent in their 2018 book. Chicle came from Puerto Rico after being part of R.Evolución Latina’s work on the island to lead a group of campers during this week, to instill the values of rebuilding through the arts and celebrating the individual.
The program was possible through the generosity of the Herman Goldman Foundation. Additional support is provided by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Pearl Studios, GrowNYC, and Starlight Deli.
