R.Evolución Latina
kicked off 2010 by inspiring young
artists through the Beyond Workshop Series. Auditions were
held to place young aspiring artists in the different classes
offered by R.Evolución Latina. Students in the dance
program participated in 4 FREE classes (8 hours) per week
(20 classes, 40 hours in total!!) in disciplines such as ballet,
hip hop, musical theater, contemporary, Latin Funk, and more.
The R.Evolución Latina Shakespeare Project and R.Evolución
Latina Choir each began a new cycle of 10 weeks of FREE classes
as well and open classes were held once a week in disciplines
that included stage combat, clowning, miming, dance, Shakespeare,
and choir. Some of New York's best teachers donated
their time to this Beyond Workshop Series in order to help
us fulfill our mission of making a difference through the
arts. We extend our deepest thanks to Rosie Fiedelman, Gabriela
Garcia, Ian Hersey, Dorit Koppel, Jaime Lozano, Catherine
Mueller, Ron Piretti, Luis Salgado, Marcos Santana, Peter
Schabel, Carlos Sierra, Mark Stuart, Emmanuel Torres, Rickey
Tripp, Amanda Turner, and William Wade. Over 100 students
participated in these workshops. We hope to fulfill more of
these young artists needs during the summer as we bring back
our Beyond Workshop Series. If you would like to sponsor this
program please contact Elizabeth Barry at eb@ebandassociates.com
or help us continue this program by donating HERE.
Here’s what some of the students
had to say:
"I was challenged to go beyond
by being pushed to my limit then realizing I could go so much
further than I thought my limit was. I realized that I was
stopping myself from growing out of fear that I would be judged
or made fun of, but at R.Evolución Latina that is not
the case. I dared to go beyond by getting over my fear of
auditioning, and showing up to the audition. I continued to
go beyond during each class when I thought I would give up
and didn't. I will continue to go beyond by showing other
people like me that only we can stop ourselves from doing
what we want to in life, and if we can truly believe in ourselves
anything is possible."
"My experience with R.Evolución
Latina is one that I can never forget. I was given the opportunity
to explore myself as an artist and work towards improving.
I was also given the opportunity to work with others and analyze
the impact one can have on another whether within a small
community or the world at large."
"I felt very inspired and motivated
to know that there's a Latino community out there that's interested
in helping people grow as artists, and as human beings."
"I have been inspired and have
tapped into a level of creativity that I did not realize was
within my reach. It's inside of me! What a blessing and gift."
"The RL family has created an
atmosphere that is safe, creative, fun and most importantly,
professional. I feel welcome and encouraged to participate.
I'm pushed to go beyond my comfort level, there are no static
expectations. The bar is raised and that's exactly what I
wanted to get out of this class - a challenge."

This May, R.Evolución
Latina will produce it's first play,
Ser o No Cer...vantes. Ser o No Cer...vantes is a
Spanish comedy that proposes that Miguel de Cervantes and
William Shakespeare were one in the same. This production
is a part of R.Evolución Latina's educational program
and will take place May 27th through 29th at the Engelman
Recital Hall at Baruch Performing Arts Center. We are excited
to collaborate with writer Yolanda Serrano and director Salvador
Toscano who are joining us from Spain just for this production.
Yolanda shares with us how this collaboration came to be.
"I first visited New York
in 1980. I fell in love with the city and hence have returned
many times, always for the pleasure of travel. I never thought
I would work here, in one of my favorite cities. But an actress,
Noelle Mauri, made it possible for me to premier in a theatrical
performance 'Good sex, good day', starring three women, in
2008."
"I thought that there would end
my professional relationship with the city. But then fate
brought the names of Luis Salgado and R.Evolución
Latina. I only knew his email through a friend, Salvador Toscano,
who is also co-author of the play that now we're opening,
'To be or not be Cervantes …', this time starring three
men. We sent the play to Luis who soon responded saying "We
are interested and want to produce it"."
"New York is now again in my career
path, after 20 years of working in Spain, as much in films
as in television and theater. For me, this premiere is a very
exciting adventure. I love theater, I love actors and I love
New York. What more can I ask?".
Ser
o No Cer...vantes
What if one day we discovered that
Cervantes and Shakespeare were the same person? Can we say
for sure that they were two different authors? How is it possible
that the two have so many things in common, so many similar
characters and so many comparable plots?
On one hand, is the brilliant writer
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, and on the other, the equally
famous William Shakespeare, both of whom shared decades, styles
and comparable plays. Based on these similarities and other
curiosities revealed in this play, we can conclude that this
theory of our young Literature professor may very well be
true.
What this play tries to do, is to arouse
the curiosity of its spectators, and at the same time, introduce
the most famous texts and characters of both the writers,
based on the argument that they were one. For those who don’t
know these eminent authors, this would be the time to get
to know them.
In this comic demonstration, we put
up pieces of some of their renowned texts, such as 'Othello'
and 'El celoso extremeño', 'The Taming of the Shrew'
and 'La ilustre fregona', and 'El Quijote' and 'Hamlet', about
which we know that Cervantes was in doubt when one day he
considered writing in English and using the pseudonym of Shakespeare
to be known in other countries.
A different way to discover these two
great personalities!
"TO BE OR NOT TO BE", a fun
and informative scandal that will shake the foundation of
Literature!

A
Revolution of Evolution!
R.Evolución
Latina is symbolic of the Revolution of Evolution.
The period between the R and the E in our brand name reinforces
the juxtaposition of the words to
truly signify what we’ve set out
to accomplish.

Unlike most
of the
R.Evolución Latina members, she doesn’t
want to act, sing or dance for millions. In fact, she takes a 180-degree
angle shift to be the mirror to action. She reminds us that for
every picture there is a photographer, for every dancer there is
someone who’s watching and that for every performer, there
is another unseen artist. The unseen artist in this play is Sally
Neiman, who has the crucial role of observing, recording and showing
Revolucion Latina to the world, highlighting what we do and whom
we affect. She is the there when the action is happening and later
Sally puts all of the puzzle pieces together, using her talent to
create amazing videos which make R.Evolución Latina available
worldwide.
“The switch is on!” Whether for
an interview or not, Sally’s sweet attitude and her constant
smile lights every room up. “Rolling!” She is so professional
one could never know whether she is quiet by nature or if it’s
because she doesn’t want to disrupt the natural sound when
recording. She adjusts the iris for brightness and regulates the
focus for more a pristine and defined image; not just technically,
as she herself is bright and focused to have become honorably the
best media project leader R.Evolución Latina could have ever
found.
A few words to Sally Neiman,
Visual Arts Project Leader: THANK YOU for your constant positive
energy, THANK YOU for being a true professional, and THANK YOU for
growing with us as an unseen but very present artist. Because of
your hard work, thousands of people know who we are and what we
do. We hope we can keep on daring to go beyond along with Sally
Neiman for every routine, play, and song to come.

has is put into practice was presented on stage using the

"Our deepest fear is not that
we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful
beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most
frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to
be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not
serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are
all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest
the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some
of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically
liberates others."

As we continue along
our journey of inspiration, empowerment,
and growth, we are continually reminded of how fortunate R.Evolución
Latina is to have the support of such an amazing organization
like Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA). BC/EFA is
one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit
AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations. With over
20 years of experience behind their belts, the staff and team
of BC/EFA have been an incredible asset in the development
of our organization. Their knowledge, encouragement,
advice, and support have truly made us feel at home in our
wonderful office (that we have thanks to Broadway Cares!)
and we are honored to be a part of the BC/EFA family.
Since its founding in 1988, BC/EFA
has raised over $140 million for critically needed services
for people with AIDS, HIV, or HIV-related illnesses. BC/EFA's
grantmaking has two emphases. The first is The Actors' Fund
of America. BC/EFA currently supports five major social service
programs at The Fund, each of which provides direct assistance
to entertainment industry professionals and performing artists
who are dealing with a variety of problems, including AIDS,
HIV, and HIV-related issues. The second major grantmaking
effort is the National Grants Program, through which BC/EFA
makes grants twice a year to hundreds of community-based AIDS
Service organizations across the country.
The two major fundraising events for BC/EFA
are The Easter Bonnet Competition and The Gypsy of the Year Competition.
During these times Broadway and Off-Broadway shows as well as touring
companies engage in six weeks of a friendly fundraising competition.
Cast members spend extra time at the theater to help out with collections
after each show and find unique and creative ways of raising additional
money - if you stop by In the Heights your donation might get you
a picture with Corbin Bleu! R.Evolución Latina again expresses our
gratitude to BC/EFA as our organization benefits directly from these
fundraising efforts (A portion of the funds raised by the Broadway
and touring companies of In the Heights is given to R.Evolución
Latina each year).
Please join us as we continue to celebrate and thank Broadway
Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. We are inspired and empowered by
this family each and every day.
